BATON ROUGE — LSU’s Britni Sneed pitched a no hitter to shut out Louisiana Tech 6-0 in game one, and the Tiger bats exploded in game two to break the LSU all-time winning streak with the 19th consecutive win as LSU beat LA Tech 8-1.
“Again we played consistent ball tonight,” said head coach Glenn Moore. “We moved some people around tonight and saw Megann Steege turn in a great performance behind the plate. Julie Stashko did a great job adjusting to a new catcher. We tried to test our depth a bit to see who could play where. The girls came through and stayed consistent.”
Game one remained scoreless until the bottom of the fifth, when LSU broke out with five runs. Right fielder Trena Peel singled to right field to start the inning. LA Tech then intentionally walked left fielder Dee Douglas and set the stage for second baseman Stephanie Hastings who tripled to right field. Shortstop Tara Asbill then singled to left field to send home Hastings. Third baseman Ashlee Ducote then hit her 12th double season, and Asbill scored. First baseman Shaunte’ Fremin hit an RBI single to center field to score Ducote.
LSU finished scoring in the sixth when Peel tripled to right field and scored on a sacrifice fly by Douglas.
Sneed picked up her 15th win for LSU, pitching seven innings. She did not allow a hit and struck 10 batters while walking none.. This was Sneed’s second collegiate no-hitter in the last two weeks. Her first was against Ole Miss on March 31.
The Tiger bats combined for 10 hits off the Lady Techsters pitcher Jessica Schott who pitched six innings and struck out two.
In game two, Tech lead-off hitter Tonya Pitts singled to center field to start the game. She then was advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt and made it to third and scored on two passed balls.
The Tigers answered back in the bottom of the inning when Douglas singled to the shortstop to get on base. Asbill then hit her ninth home run of the season to put LSU up 2-1.
Catcher Megann Steege doubled to right field to start the second inning for the Tigers. Steege then scored on an RBI single by Douglas to center field. Hastings tripled to right field to send home Douglas and then scored on a single to right field by Asbill.
In the third, LSU continued scoring when center fielder Stacey Newton made it home on Peel’s second triple of the day. Peel later scored when Auburne Ziober reached base on a fielder’s choice.
Steege hit an RBI single in the fourth to send home Ducote and put the Tigers up 8-1.
The Tiger bats combined for 12 hits with Douglas going 3-for-3 and Ducote going 2-for-2.
Senior Julie Stashko picked up her seventh win for LSU, allowing one run off six hits.
The Tigers will play SEC opponent South Carolina in a double header in Columbia on Friday night at 4p.m.
