MINNEAPOLIS, Minn. — The LSU men and women divers will be competing in the United States Diving Senior Zone Championships this weekend at the University Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn.
“This is a great opportunity for our divers to show their talent to the rest of nation,” said LSU diving coach Scott Reich. “We had awesome performances in both the men’s and women’s championships this season, and hopefully we can keep up the good finishes this weekend.”
Competing for the Lady Tigers this weekend will be NCAA Diving Champions, Ashley Culpepper and Jaime Watkins, along with freshman Michelle Coryell, senior Gretchen Mury, and sophomore Holly Winters.
During the 1999-00 Women’s Swimming and Diving Championships, Watkins won the National Championship in the 1-meter diving event, and Culpepper took the National Championship in the 3-meter competition.
Culpepper was honored as Diver of the Year following the Championships, and LSU’s Reich was named Diving Coach of the Year.
“It was a great honor to be named Diving Coach of the Year,” Reich said. “But I owe it all to the wonderful divers that I have the honor to coach. They all work hard each and every day to make themselves better, and that’s why they are some of the best divers in the nation.”
The Tiger divers that will be competing in this weekend’s competition are juniors Corey Fox and Erik Petursson, along with freshman Kyle VanArsdale.
Fox competed in the Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships this season and placed 12th in the 1-meter diving event. Fox led the Tigers to a 23rd-place finish in the Championships.
The U.S. Diving Senior Zone Championships will begin at 10 a.m. Friday and conclude Sunday evening.
