Fox Finishes 12th at NCAA Diving Championships

MINNEAPOLIS, MINN. — LSU senior diver Corey Fox finished in 12th-place Thursday at the NCAA Men’s Swimming and Diving Championships held here in Minneapolis, Minn.

Fox improved upon his 1999 NCAA Championship score of 465.50 in the 1-meter diving competition with a 490.05 point finish in the event Thursday evening. Last season Fox placed 21st in the 1-meter springboard competition.

“I think that both of our guys did a solid job today,” said LSU head coach Rick Meador. “They need to pick up their performance level a little bit during the rest of the meet, but after today we’re still in good shape.”

The Tigers ended the opening day of the NCAA Championships in 20th-place by scoring five total-team points. The University of Texas is leading the event with 173 points, followed by the defending NCAA Champion Auburn University (151 pts.), and Arizona (114.5 pts).

Sophomore Rodrigo Castro was the second LSU Tiger to compete in the opening day of the championship. Castro placed 21st in the 400-meter freestyle event with a time of 3:50.17, but didn’t qualify for the final.

LSU’s other NCAA qualifier, senior Neal Satterly, is slated to compete in the 100-backstroke event later this weekend and did not participate in Thursday’s competition.

The NCAA Championships will continue Friday at the University of Minnesota Aquatics Center in Minneapolis, Minn. Preliminary heats begin at 11 a.m. Central Time, with the championship finals set for 7 p.m.
