Three Former Lady Tigers Make WNBA Rosters

BATON ROUGE — Former LSU standouts Cornelia Gayden, Elaine Powell and Katrina Hibbert have found spots on WNBA rosters, the league announced on Monday as teams had to trim their rosters to 11 players for the regular-season.

Gayden, a three-time first team all-Southeastern Conference selection from 1993-95, landed a position on the Orlando Miracle after sitting out of organized basketball for the last two years. Gayden, who played professionally both in the now defunct ABL and overseas, still holds the NCAA record for 3-pointers in a game with 12 and she ranks second all-time in NCAA history with 337 career 3-point goals.

Powell, who played at LSU from 1995-97, begins her second year with the Orlando Miracle after being an all-star in the ABL as a rookie in 1997.

Last year, Powell missed most of her first WNBA season with an injury, but she’s expected to be a starter at the shooting guard position for the Miracle this year.

Hibbert, fresh off leading the Lady Tigers to the Elite Eight at the NCAA Tournament in March, has also earned a roster spot with the Seattle Storm. Hibbert was selected in the fourth round by the Storm in the WNBA Draft in
April.

The Seattle Times reported on Monday that Hibbert is one of two players being considered for the starting spot at the small forward position. Hibbert finished her LSU career as one of only three players in school history to accumulate 1,500 points, 400 assists and 200 steals.

The WNBA regular-season starts this week and Gayden and Powell can be seen on ESPN on next Monday when the Miracle host the Sacramento Monarchs at 7 p.m.
