RICHMOND, Va. — For the first time since 1986 and the second time in school history, the LSU women’s basketball team advanced to the Elite Eight after beating second-seeded Duke, 79-66, Saturday morning in Richmond, Va.
The Lady Tigers (25-6) were led by Marie Ferdinand who scored 22 points, DeTrina White with 19, April Brown with 15 and Katrina Hibbert with 14.
In the final 2:20, LSU made 11 of 14 free throws to maintain more than an eight-point lead and held off the Blue Devils.
LSU trailed by as much as seven points, 43-36, early in the second half, however the Lady Tigers battled back on both ends of the court to go on a 24-8 run and lead by nine, 60-51.
After being out-rebounded throughout the first 30 minutes, LSU stepped up with solid defense and points in transition to force Duke into their style of play.
Duke finished the season at 28-6 overall.
LSU will play the winner of Connecticut and Oklahoma in the Elite Eight Monday in Richmond.
