BATON ROUGE — LSU women’s golfer Meredith Duncan is one five nationally-ranked players chosen to represent the United States next month in the World University Golf Championships in Ireland.
The event is held every other year and all participants must be University Students. Approximately 14 women’s teams and 20 men’s teams will take part in the event at the Castlerock Golf Links in Coleraine, Northern Ireland, July 24-28. This will mark the first time the event has been held in Ireland. The USA team previously won the championship in 1986 (the inaugural year) and also won in 1988, 1996 and 1998.
This year’s team is coached by Diane Thomason of Iowa and Therese Hession of Ohio State.
Duncan, a native of Shreveport, who finished her sophomore year with a seventh-place finish in the NCAA Division I championships last month in Oregon and an honorable mention All-American citation, will be the top-ranked female on the five-player team. She finished the year ranked 16th in the national rankings with a team best scoring average of 75.32 strokes per round.
Joining Duncan on the team will be four golfers all ranked in the top 50 in the national rankings: Angie Yoon of Nevada (36); Kristin Dufour of Texas (42); Sarah Sasse of Nebraska (44) and Natalie Tucker of Indiana (48).
Duncan had eighth top 10 finishes on the season, including six in the spring. In her much heralded seventh place finish in the NCAA Championships, Duncan moved from 116th place after an opening round 82 to seventh at the end of 72 holes by playing the last 38 holes in four-under par. The Byrd High School product’s top finish was a second place at the LSU-Cleveland Classic at the school’s University Club in April.
