BATON ROUGE – LSU’s 2000 Spring Football Coaching Clinic, this year featuring coaching veteran Erk Russell, will be held Friday and Saturday on the LSU campus.
Among the featured speakers will be new LSU head coach Nick Saban who will speak on the “Team Dynamics of LSU Football” during the clinic.
Russell, who won national championships as head coach at Georgia Southern, was the defensive coordinator at the University of Georgia for 17 years, including the Bulldogs’ 1980 national championship team.
An annual feature of the clinic is the participation of the Louisiana state champion coaches of the previous season. This year’s participants will be Dennis Dunn of AAAAA champ Shreveport Evangel, J.T. Curtis of AAAA champ John Curtis, Roman Bates of AAAA runner-up Baton Rouge Capitol, Donald Currier of Class AAA champion Amite, Vic Dalrymple of Class A champion Oak Grove and Percy Duhe of New Orleans Sarah Reed.
Other featured speakers will be Bob McQueen of Temple, Texas, Rusty Dowling of Texas AAAA champion Texas City and Mike Justice of Mississippi AAAAA champion Madison Central.
In addition to Saban, LSU special teams coordinator Sal Sunseri will speak on punt blocks and returns, offensive line coach Rick Trickett will speak on pass protection techniques, defensive line coach Pete Jenkins will speak on teaching the use of hands on defense, offensive coordinator Jimbo Fisher will speak on variation of the smash route, defensive coordinator Phil Elmassian will speak on linebacker fundamentals and strength coach Tommy Moffitt will speak on the Tigers’ off-season and conditioning program.
The remainder of the Tiger coaching staff will be available in breakout sessions.
Registration will be held beginning at 10 a.m. on Friday on the concourse of the Pete Maravich Assembly Center and the clinic is set to begin with a 10:30 a.m. lecture.
The clinic will conclude with an LSU football scrimmage at 1 p.m. on Saturday. The clinic fee will be $20 which includes meals.
