BATON ROUGE, La. — Ryan Richard, a shortstop/pitcher at Baton Rouge’s Broadmoor High School, has signed a letter-of-intent with LSU. Richard, a 6-2, 200-pound right-hander, will enroll in school next month and be eligible for competition immediately.
Richard, a finalist for the 1998-99 Baton Rouge Advocate Male Athlete of the Year award, batted .569 last season with five homers, 21 doubles and 44 RBI. As a pitcher, he posted a 10-2 mark and a 1.27 ERA. Richard earned first-team Class 4A all-state honors, and he participated in the LHSAA all-star game.
In 1998, Richard hit .464 with nine homers and 38 RBI, and he registered a 13-1 pitching record with a 1.31 ERA.
He was named first-team all-state, and he was selected to USA Today’s honorable mention all-America squad.
Richard was also a two-year starter at quarterback for the Broadmoor football team, leading the Buccaneers to the state semifinals in 1997 and to the quarterfinals last season. He is scheduled to play in the LHSAA football all-star game in Tiger Stadium July 23.
Richard maintained a 3.5 gpa at Broadmoor, and he served as president of the school’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes chapter.
Richard will join his LSU teammates on August 16, when the members of the Tigers’ 2000 squad are scheduled to report to campus. LSU’s 2000 regular season is set to begin on February 11, when the Tigers play host to Virginia in Alex Box Stadium.
