BATON ROUGE — The Southeastern Conference title won by the LSU women’s track and field team on Sunday was the latest highlight in what has been a banner athletic year by the school.
LSU has now captured four SEC titles this year ? football, women’s basketball, women’s indoor and outdoor track and field. The four SEC titles during the 2007-08 athletic season is the most by LSU since the league expanded to 12 teams in 1992.
In addition to its four SEC titles, the Tigers have claimed runner-up finishes in the league in four other sports – baseball, volleyball, and men’s indoor and outdoor track and field.
On top of that, LSU also has four SEC Western Division titles to its credit as the Tigers have claimed the division in football, volleyball, baseball and women’s soccer.
The LSU record for SEC titles in a single athletic season is five, which was most recently accomplished in 1990-91. LSU also claimed five league titles in 1988-89 and 1989-90.
On the national scene, the Tiger football team claimed its third national title, and second in five years, with a 38-24 win over Ohio State in the BCS National Championship Game in New Orleans in January.
LSU also has top five national finishes this year in women’s basketball, gymnastics, women’s indoor track and field and men’s indoor track and field.
NCAA post-season events in the sports of baseball and men’s and women’s outdoor track and field have yet to take place.
By the end of the 2007-08 athletic year, LSU will have sent 19 of its 20 varsity athletic teams to NCAA post-season play, a first in school history.
