TAMPA, Fla. — Sylvia Fowles once again keeps adding to her list of accolades as the 6-6 senior center for the LSU women’s basketball team was named as one of the 10 NCAA Division I State Farm Coaches’ All-Americans on Saturday morning.
The Women’s Basketball Coaches Association (WBCA) announced the team during a press conference at the Hyatt Regency in Tampa.
The All-America team, formerly sponsored by Kodak, also included Maryland’s Crystal Langhorne and Kristi Toliver, North Carolina’s Erlana Larkins, Louisville’s Angel McCoughtry, Connecticut’s Maya Moore and Renee Montgomery, Oklahoma’s Courtney Paris, Tennessee’s Candace Parker and Stanford’s Candice Wiggins. Wiggins was also named as the State Farm Wade Trophy recipient as the nation’s top player.
Fowles, who received the honor by the WBCA for the second straight season, has led LSU back to the Final Four for the fifth straight year. The Miami, Fla., native has averaged 17.2 points and 10.0 rebounds per game and was named the Southeastern Conference Player of the Year by both the coaches and the media.
“When I was a freshman I never imagined that I would be up here,” Fowles said. “But, I knew with hard work I could accomplish these things and with the help on my coaches and teammates it is now a reality. It is a great honor to be listed among the best players in the country.”
Fowles has now been named first-team All-America honors from the Associated Press, the United States Basketball Writers Association (USBWA), ESPN.com in addition to her WBCA National Defensive Player of the Year award.
LSU and Fowles play Tennessee in the national semifinal on Sunday at 8:30 p.m. CDT at the St. Pete Times Forum.
