BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — After one of the most successful fall campaigns in the history of LSU athletics, including a trio of Southeastern Conference Western Division titles and the BCS National Championship, a total of 31 Tiger student-athletes were named to the 2007 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll, SEC Commissioner Mike Slive announced on Friday.
The National Champion Tiger football team topped the list of teams with members on the Honor Roll, placing 14 members on the list, including senior linebacker Luke Sanders, who recorded 30 tackles on the season, including a half sack, three pass break-ups and both forced and recovered a fumble. Sanders is projected to graduate this spring with his degree in management.
In addition, 11 members of the women’s soccer team, which won the SEC Western Division and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the first time, made the list, including All-SEC and Soccer Buzz and NSCAA/adidas All-Central Region selections Chelsea Potts and Michelle Makasini.
Six members of the Tiger volleyball team, which also won the SEC West and advanced to the NCAA Tournament for the third-straight year, also made the Honor Roll, led by All-Americans Lauren DeGirolamo and Elena Martinez, the SEC Defensive Player of the Year.
A total of 483 student-athletes were named to the 2007-08 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll. South Carolina topped the list with 65 student-athletes on the fall academic roster. Kentucky was close behind with 60 honorees. Both schools also have men’s soccer programs that contributed to their inflated numbers. Florida was third with 46 fall student-athletes honored.
The 2007 SEC Fall Academic Honor Roll is based on grades from the 2007 Spring, Summer and Fall terms. To be named to the Academic Honor Roll a student-athlete must meet the following criteria:
(1) A student-athlete must have a grade point average of 3.00 or above for either the preceding academic year (two semesters or three quarters) or have a cumulative grade point average of 3.00 or above at the nominating institution.
(2) If a student-athlete attends summer school, his/her grade point average during the summer academic term must be included in the calculation used to determine eligibility for the Academic Honor Roll.
(3) Student-athletes eligible for the Honor Roll include those receiving an athletic scholarship, recipients of an athletics award (i.e., letter winner), and non-scholarship student-athletes who have been on a varsity team for two seasons.
(4) Prior to being nominated, a student-athlete must have successfully completed 24 semester or 36 quarter hours of non-remedial academic credit toward a baccalaureate degree at the nominating institution.
(5) The student-athlete must have been a member of a varsity team for the sport’s entire NCAA Championship segment.
