BATON ROUGE – The LSU women’s basketball team is back on the road for a Noon CT showdown at Tennessee on Sunday, January 27. The game will be broadcast on the SEC Network.
The Lady Tigers are 12-6 (3-3 SEC) on the season following last Sunday’s 62-56 victory at Alabama. Sophomore Khayla Pointer scored a career-high 26 points to lead LSU. Sophomore Faustine Aifuwa and junior Ayana Mitchell added 11 and 10 points, respectively.
Mitchell is shooting 56.1 percent from the field and grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game to rank fourth in the SEC. She ranks 18th in the league with 13.2 points per game and seventh in steals at 2.0 per game.
Pointer is second on the squad at 12.7 points per game to rank 25th in the league. She also ranks fifth in the SEC with 4.6 assists per contest and is 10th in the league in steals at 1.9 per game.
Aifuwa rounds out the trio of every-game starters and is averaging 8.9 points and 6.0 boards per game with 22 blocked shots. Her 1.2 blocks per game average ranks eighth in the league, while her boards per game numbers rank 18th in the SEC.
LSU’s scoring defense is 10th in the nation and tops in the SEC by holding opponents to 53.7 points per game. The Lady Tigers are holding teams to 38.2 percent from the field, while their 3-point shooting defense is 28.7 percent.
Tennessee is 12-7 overall and 1-5 in the SEC standings. The Lady Vols squad features four players averaging double-figure scoring, led by sophomore guard Evina Westbrook at 16.8 points per game. Sophomore Rennia Davis and senior Meme Jackson are averaging 13.1 and 12.1 points per game, respectively. Rookie Zaay Green has played in all 19 games this season and averages 10.6 points per game. Davis is the team’s leading rebounder with 7.7 boards per game and senior Cheridene Green follows with 7.2 rebounds per game.
This will be the 64th meeting between the schools. The Lady Vols hold a 48-15 lead in the series. LSU has won two of the last three matchups, including last year’s only game, 70-59 in Baton Rouge, on January 28, 2018, when Tennessee was ranked No. 10 in the nation.
