Women’s Tennis Secures First Victory of 2019

TAMPA, Fla. – The LSU women’s tennis team opened their 2019 dual season with a 6-1 win over USF at the USF Varsity Tennis Courts on Saturday.

LSU improved their all-time record against USF to 2-0 and is 1-0 in the 2019 season.

“We started our season with a very tough opponent and while we didn’t play our best, we handled the adversity of the day extremely well and come out with a win,” LSU co-head coach Julia Sell said. “This is a positive way to start the season and now we will return home to get ready for the ITA Kickoff weekend.”

The Tigers secured the doubles point quickly with wins on Court One and Three. The No. 30 ranked pair of junior Paris Corley and sophomore Taylor Bridges defeated Janvhi Clark and Laura Pellicer Perello 6-2 on Court Three, while the No. 9 ranked duo of senior Jessica Golovin and sophomore Eden Richardson took the 6-4 win against Vanja Klaric and Nicole Dzenga on Court One.

Sophomore Luba Vasilyuk gave the Lady Tigers the second point after taking a singles win in straight sets on Court Six against Nicole Dzenga 6-2, 6-3.

In her spring singles debut in Purple and Gold, Corley was next off the court defeating Amelie Boy, 6-2,6-3 on Court Five.

Senior Kennan Johnson battled back after losing her first set to Pellicer Perello 7-5. The No.72 ranked Tiger forced three sets and won the last two 6-1 and 7-5 at No. 3 to clinch the first win of the season for the Tigers.

Golovin picked up her first singles win of the dual season after a hard-fought match in straight sets against Evelyne Tiron, 7-6, 7-6 at No. 2.

Bridges closed out singles play on Court Four and gave the Tigers the 6-1 victory after defeating Vanja Klaric, 6-2, 5-7, 7-6.

The Tigers will travel to Tallahassee, Fla. next weekend to compete in the ITA Kickoff Weekend. LSU will face off against Clemson on Friday, Jan. 25 at noon CT before facing either Florida State or Tennessee on Saturday, Jan. 26.
