BATON ROUGE – After sweeping the diving events in last weekend’s dual meet against Georgia, LSU divers Juan Celaya-Hernandez and Lizzie Cui have earned SEC diving honors. Celaya-Hernandez has been named the Male Diver of the week, while Cui was named the Female Diver of the Week.
Celaya-Hernandez, a sophomore from Mexico, took home gold in both springboard events against the No. 11 Bulldogs. On one-meter, Celaya-Hernandez scored a 393.00, winning the event by 56.32 points. On three-meter, Celaya-Hernandez dove to a score of 413.55. He won the event by 63.07 points. Both scores also shattered the NCAA Zones Qualifying Standards.
Cui, a junior from Auckland, New Zealand, overpowered the No. 6 Bulldogs by winning both the one-meter and three-meter springboard events. On three-meter, Cui won the event by 44.17 points, and was just .15 points short of her season-high score she set back in October in a double-dual meet at Pittsburgh. Cui also scored a 321.15 on one-meter, winning the event by 38.70 points.
For Celaya-Hernandez, this is the third time this season he has taken weekly honors, while this is the second time Cui has been named Diver of the Week.
“I’m excited for Lizzie and Juan to receive SEC honors,” said LSU diving head coach Doug Shaffer. “They’ve both had exceptional performances since the beginning of the year. As they showed in Athens, their momentum is continuing to build. I couldn’t be happier with where they are as we look ahead towards the championship season.”
Both Cui and Celaya-Hernandez will compete in the next dual meet against Texas A&M at 10 a.m. on Saturday in the LSU Natatorium. For fans looking to attend, admission is free and the first 100 fans will get free breakfast.
