Notes on the Tigers
The Tigers won three of four games last week, including a three-game sweep of Wichita State over the weekend in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … senior left-hander Jared Poche’ extended his consecutive scoreless innings streak to 29 on Saturday, as he blanked Wichita State in a seven-inning outing … Poche’ limited the Shockers to just four hits with no walks and three strikeouts, firing 91 pitches and leaving the game after the seventh inning with a 12-0 lead … the streak of 29 straight scoreless innings in a single season is the second-longest in LSU history – Ben McDonald tossed 44.2 straight scoreless frames in 1989 … on the year, Poche’ is 4-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 29 innings with two walks and 18 strikeouts … Poche’ has given up just eight hits all season, and opponents are batting only .086 against him … in his three previous outings, he blanked Baylor over seven innings on three hits; he held Maryland hitless until the ninth inning; and he fired a complete-game, seven-inning no-hitter against Army … senior second baseman Cole Freeman hit .500 (8-for-16) in four games last week with seven runs scored, two doubles, two RBI, one stolen base and a .556 on-base percentage … he hit .545 (6-for-11) in LSU’s three-game sweep of Wichita State with two doubles, two RBI and seven runs … Freeman, who has a current 10-game hit streak, increased his batting average for the season to a remarkable .482 (27-for-56), which leads the SEC … Freeman has five doubles, nine RBI, 17 runs, six stolen bases and a .574 on-base percentage through LSU’s first 16 games of the season … sophomore leftfielder Antoine Duplantis hit .444 (8-for-18) in four games last week with one double, six RBI and four runs scored … Duplantis collected four RBI – one shy of his career high – in Sunday’s win over the Shockers … senior shortstop Kramer Robertson batted .412 (7-for-17) last week with two doubles, one RBI and eight runs scored … junior rightfielder Greg Deichmann homered twice in the Wichita State series and collected six RBI, increasing his season totals to seven homers and 23 RBI – both SEC-leading figures … junior right-hander Alex Lange turned in a dominating effort on Friday against Wichita State, limiting the Shockers to just two hits in eight scoreless innings with no walks and nine strikeouts … freshman right-hander Eric Walker defeated Wichita State on Sunday by firing six shutout innings with 85 pitches … Walker limited the Shockers to just three hits while recording three strikeouts as LSU completed a three-game sweep of WSU … Walker improved to 2-0 this season, and he has a 2.14 ERA in 21 innings with five walks and 22 strikeouts … LSU’s weekend starting rotation of Lange, Poche’ and Walker combined last weekend to allow no runs on nine hits in 21 innings with two walks and 15 strikeouts.
