Notes on the Tigers
LSU split four games last week, defeating Nicholls on Tuesday before posting a 1-2 mark at the Shriners Hospital for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston … LSU defeated No. 17 Baylor and dropped decisions to No. 1 TCU and to No. 10 Texas Tech … senior left-hander Jared Poche’ delivered his third straight brilliant outing on Saturday, firing seven shutout innings in LSU’s 4-0 win over No. 17 Baylor at the Shriners Hospitals for Children College Classic at Minute Maid Park in Houston … the win was the 30th of Poche’s LSU career, as he became the ninth Tiger pitcher to record 30 wins … Poche’ blanked Baylor in seven innings of work, allowing just five hits with no walks and five strikeouts … he was named to the Shriners College Classic all-tournament team … Poche’ has now pitched 22 innings this season without allowing a run … on the year, he is 3-0 with a 0.00 ERA in 22 innings with two walks and 15 strikeouts … Poche’ has given up just four hits, and opponents are batting only .058 (4-for-69) against him … in his two previous outings, he held Maryland hitless until the ninth inning, and he fired a complete-game, seven-inning no-hitter against Army … senior second baseman Cole Freeman batted .467 (7-for-15) in the Tigers’ four games last week with one double, two runs and one RBI … Freeman, LSU’s leadoff hitter, is batting a team-high .475 (19-for-40) with three doubles, 10 runs, seven RBI, five steals and a .580 on-base percentage … centerfielder Antoine Duplantis also hit .467 (7-for-15) last week with four RBI, one run and two stolen bases … freshman right-hander Eric Walker delivered a career-best performance against Texas Tech on Sunday, limiting the Red Raiders to one run on six hits in six innings with no walks and a career-high seven strikeouts … sophomore right-hander Caleb Gilbert posted two impressive relief performances last week, firing three shutout innings with two strikeouts … Gilbert has a 0.90 ERA on the year in five appearances, with 13 strikeouts and only one walk in 10 innings of work … LSU will play host this weekend to Wichita State, a series that will mark the first meeting between the schools since the opening round of the 1996 College World Series … LSU captured its first two of six national titles in 1991 and 1993 with championship-game wins over Wichita State … this weekend’s series marks the Shockers’ second visit to Baton Rouge and their first since 1987, when LSU swept a three-game series versus WSU.
