BATON ROUGE – LSU gymnastics freshman Kennedi Edney has been named the Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week after totaling an all-around score of 39.625 and winning the bars and beam titles against sixth-ranked Kentucky, the league office announced Tuesday.
Against the Wildcats, Edney performed in the all-around for the first time and scored the third-highest score by a freshman in school history. The Chino, California native also totaled scores of 9.925 on bars and 9.95 on beam for the event titles.
Edney was inserted into the floor lineup after the second rotation and electrified the crowd with a 9.925. With the performance on floor, Edney joins April Burkholder as the only freshmen in school history to earn a score of 9.925 or better on all four events in their first season.
The award marked the second conference honor for Edney this season. She was also named the SEC Freshman of the Week after the first meet against No. 9 Georgia. Edney posted a 9.95 against the Bulldogs on vault in her first collegiate routine.
The Tigers are coming off of a 197.475 on the road. In that meet, LSU posted season highs on both beam and floor. The floor score was also the highest on the road against an SEC Opponent in school history.
Overall, LSU sits at No. 2 in the national rankings. The Tigers own the top spot on beam, second spot on floor and third spot on both bars and vault. LSU returns to the Maravich Center to take on No.11 Missouri at 7:30 p.m. CT Friday.
