BATON ROUGE – Former LSU basketball star Tasmin Mitchell, one of just three LSU players to make four major statistical milestones in his Tiger career, was announced Friday by the Southeastern Conference as one of the 14 Allstate® SEC Basketball Legends that will be honored at the SEC Men’s Basketball Tournament March 8-12 at Bridgestone Arena in Nashville, Tennessee.
The 2017 class includes George Linn, Alabama; Oliver Miller, Arkansas; Marquis Daniels, Auburn; Matt Bonner, Florida; Jimmy Pitts, Georgia; Keith Bogans, Kentucky; Tasmin Mitchell, LSU; Jason Harrison, Ole Miss; Dontae’ Jones, Mississippi State; Jon Sundvold, Missouri; Bobby Cremins, South Carolina; Ron Slay, Tennessee; Acie Law IV, Texas A&M; Barry Booker, Vanderbilt.
Each SEC Basketball Legend will be recognized at halftime of his institution’s first game at the tournament. Highlighting the schedule of events at the Sunkist Soda SEC FanFare will be appearances by selected legends. Fanfare will be located at Broadway and 5th Avenue. This marks the 19th year of the SEC Basketball Legends program.
Mitchell, who played from 2005-10, is one of three LSU players to have finished his career with 1,000 points, 500 rebounds, 200 assists and 100 steals.
Mitchell was a freshman during the 2005-06 season when the Tigers won the 2006 SEC regular season championship and advanced to the NCAA Final Four after wins over Iona, Texas A&M, top-seed Duke and Texas. After missing most of the 2007-08 campaign and getting a medical redshirt season, Mitchell was part of a 2009 team that also captured the Southeastern Conference championship.
Mitchell finished his career as the No. 3 scorer in LSU history with 1,989 points for 137 games, averaging 11.4 points in 2006, 14.5 points in 2007, 16.3 points in 2009 and 16.8 points in 2010. Only Rudy Macklin and Pete Maravich would score more in LSU history.
The native of Denham Springs, Louisiana, is sixth all-time in rebounds with 950 boards, a 6.9 career average, topped by his average of 9.4 boards a game in 2010. Mitchell is also in the top 10 all-time in steals with 190.
Mitchell was a two-time member of the All-SEC team.
