BATON ROUGE, La. — The Intercollegiate Tennis Association released the first set of rankings for the 2017 spring season, listing LSU as the No. 19 team in the country.
After a strong 2015-16 campaign in which co-head coaches Julia Sell and Michael Sell led LSU to a 19-12 record and a second-round NCAA tournament appearance, the women’s tennis team finished the season ranked at No. 18.
LSU broke the school record for the best team ranking in school history three separate times last season, ranking at No. 13, No. 12 and the school’s first ever top-ten ranking at No. 9 in the March 1 rankings.
Junior Ryann Foster opens the spring ranked No. 83 in the country in singles and the pairing of Foster and senior Joana Valle Costa ranks No. 27 in the country in doubles.
After a 25-14 overall singles record last season, Foster has gotten off to a tremendous start in the 2016-17 season with an 11-4 singles record in the fall. Foster and Valle Costa went 10-6 as a doubles tandem last season and are 3-0 when paired together so far this season.
LSU opens its spring schedule Saturday, Jan. 21 at the LSU Tennis Complex in a double-header against Northwestern St. at 11 a.m. and Southern at 4 p.m.
