Diving Team Prepped for Auburn Diving Invite

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU diving team will travel to Auburn, Ala., to compete in the Auburn Diving Invitational at the James E. Martin Aquatics Center.

The event will start on Saturday at 11 a.m. CT with the women’s three-meter and men’s one-meter, followed by the men’s three-meter and women’s one-meter on Sunday. The Invitational will conclude with the men’s and women’s platform on Monday. Florida State, Alabama, South Carolina and Tennessee are also slated to participate.

“Tomorrow will be the first of three important days of competition to complete our 2016 calendar,” said head diving coach Doug Shaffer.

“Coming off finals, it’s good to have competition to promote an immediate refocus, and the divers are really looking forward to this meet. This will be the second of three conference-like multi day meets which continue to provide a progress gauge as we work toward our 2017 championship season.”

On the men’s side, freshman Juan Celaya-Hernandez has tallied four wins in five events on the year, finishing no lower than second place. Celaya-Hernandez holds the school and pool record of 431.80 on three-meter, besting the previous record in his collegiate debut in a home meet against Auburn. A native of Mexico, Celaya-Hernandez is also a two-time SEC Male Diver of the Week.

For the women, sophomore Lizzie Cui earned a second place finish on three-meter in the final round of the Mizzou Diving Invite, posting a personal best of 350.70 to earn a spot at third on the LSU all-time list. Cui also compiled a score of 304.15 to garner third overall on the one-meter at the invite. A native of New Zealand, Cui earned SEC Female Diver of the Week accolades after sweeping both the one-meter and three-meter events against Tulane.

“With Auburn, Florida State, Tennessee, South Carolina and Alabama all in attendance, the level of competition is strong and deep,” said Shaffer. “The quality of diving at this meet will be very good, and I expect the divers to stay focused, compete well and continue to build on the success we’ve already had this season.”
