BATON ROUGE, La. – The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes honored six student-athletes for their academic achievements and community service for the month of October.
Each month, five student-athletes are recognized for their academic improvement, dedication and proven ability. In addition, one student-athlete is chosen through LSU’s Student-Athlete Affairs program for their volunteerism and commitment to the community.
October’s student-athletes of the month are Nick Bush [Baseball], Craig Victor II [Basketball], Dajour Braxton [Men’s Track & Field], Michael Smith [Football] and Caroline Brockmeier [Soccer]. Emma Hiller [Beach Volleyball] was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month.
Bush and Victor are sport administration majors; Braxton is a sport commerce major; Smith is a computer engineering major; Brockmeier is a kinesiology major and Hiller is textile, apparel, and merchandise major.
Bush is a redshirt freshman pitcher. He sat out his freshman year due to an injury. In high school, the Leesburg, Georgia native was named as a Perfect Game All-American. His senior year he worked 25 innings allowing just 12 hits. He also posted a 1.12 ERA while striking out 39 batters.
Victor is a junior forward who earned his first letter during the 2015-16 season. After having to sit out through the fall semester due to transfer rules, the New Orleans native made his LSU debut against Gardner-Webb on December 16, 2015. During his first season wearing purple and gold, Victor averaged 11.5 points per game and at one point, posted double-digit points in seven consecutive games.
Braxton is a sophomore out of Las Vegas, Nevada. Prior to beginning his career at LSU he won three silver medals and one bronze medal at the AAU Junior Olympics. Braxton also was a three time state champion in Nevada. During the 2016 season so far, the sophomore has placed third in his past three meets.
Smith is currently a freshman on the LSU football team from Kileen, Texas.
Brockmeier is a transfer onto the soccer team from Tallahassee, Florida. During the 2015 season she did not allow a goal in more than 110 minutes of action at goalkeeper, helping her team to a national championship. Her freshman year she was named the NO. 1 goalkeeper in college soccer by everybodysoccer.com.
Hiller was selected as the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program Student-Athlete of the Month for her dedication to the community, participating in numerous service events throughout her LSU career. The senior is a three-time letter winner who has been a contributing part of the team ever since she stepped on campus. During her freshman season she was able to be a part of the Beach Volleyball Program’s inaugural match where the Baton Rouge native helped tally the program’s very first court victory. After the devastating floods earlier this year Hiller went out in the community to help with flood relief.
For putting forth extra effort in the classroom and community in addition to their rigorous academic and competition schedules, these six student-athletes will have their pictures displayed on the wall in the Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes.
