Volleyball Returns Home for Tiger Classic

BATON ROUGE – The LSU volleyball team returns home to face Connecticut, Virginia and Southern Miss in the 2016 Tiger Classic Friday and Saturday at the Maravich Center.

The Tigers open up with a doubleheader at 10 a.m. and 7:30 p.m. Friday. LSU returns for the final day at 1 p.m. Saturday. All home matches are FREE and fans are reminded of the Geaux Clear policy aimed to speed up gate entries and enhance fan safety.

Weekend Promotions
The first 500 LSU students will be served donuts prior to the home opener against UCONN. The match against Virginia at 7:30 p.m. Friday will be Student Point Night and they’ll have a chance to receive extra Priority Points. The final match of the weekend will be the Volleyball Camp Reunion. LSU volleyball welcomes back the participants of the program’s summer camp.

Fran’s Final Thoughts
“We are looking forward to playing in front of our home crowd and on our new playing surface. UCONN, Virginia and Southern Miss are all quality teams so it should be a great weekend of competition.”

Series History with the Field
Friday’s match against UCONN is the second meeting between the schools with LSU leading 1-0. Virginia and LSU are tied at 1-1 in program history. This is the seventh meeting between the Tigers and Golden Eagles with LSU leading the all-time series, 6-0.

Last Weekend
LSU opened the 2016 season in Durham for the Duke Invitational. The Tigers finished with a 2-1 record with wins over Eastern Kentucky and UNC Greensboro. LSU won its season opener for the 12th time in the last 16 seasons. It was also the 15th season opening win under head coach Fran Flory. The Tigers’ 3-1 win over UNCG was the first time LSU lost the first set and won the match since defeating Xavier 3-1 on Sept. 4, 2015.

Team Notes
>> Junior Gina Tillis leads the squad with 38 kills on the season and 3.45 kills per set. Tillis had two double doubles and led the team in kills in two matches over the weekend. The Texas native also hit .404 in the match against UNCG.

>> Freshman Jariel Tureaud made an immediate impact for the Tigers in two matches. In her first appearance as a Tiger, Tureaud hit .500 with 11 kills in three sets. She became the first player since 2014 to finish a match with a .500 hitting percentage.

>> Freshman Anna Zwiebel made her debut as LSU’s setter at the Duke Invitational. Zwiebel totaled 113 assists over the weekend with a 9.42 assists per set ratio.

>> LSU was outblocked in the match against UNCG yet still won, 3-1. It was the first time since 2014 that LSU was outblocked and still won a match.
