BATON ROUGE, La. — The appearance of the “Rally Possum” is recounted at 2 p.m. CT Thursday when the SEC Network airs a replay of the LSU baseball team’s remarkable win in May over Arkansas.
The telecast of the LSU-Arkansas game is part of the Tigers’ SEC Network “Takeover,” where 12 classic events in six different sports are being shown over a 24-hour period. The takeover begins Wednesday at 11 p.m. CT and concludes Thursday at 11 p.m. CT.
On May 7 in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field, the LSU baseball squad trailed Arkansas, 9-1, entering the bottom of the fifth inning. The Tigers had reduced the deficit to 9-5 by the bottom of the seventh, when a baby possum emerged from the stands and darted onto the playing field.
After scampering around the bemused Arkansas players in left field, the possum was captured by the LSU facilities staff and returned to its natural habitat.
No doubt inspired by the appearance of the wayward marsupial, the Tigers later scored four runs in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game and posted a 10-9 walk-off win with a run in the 10th.
Riding the wave of momentum created by the “Rally Possum,” LSU went on to win 12 of its next 14 games – including three victories in five games against top-ranked Florida — and earn a National Seed for the NCAA Tournament.
