Deichmann to Take Part in College HR Derby

OMAHA, Neb. — LSU first baseman Greg Deichmann will take part in the 2016 TD Ameritrade College Home Run Derby, it was announced Monday.

The top power hitters in college baseball will converge on TD Ameritrade Park in Omaha for the seventh annual event at 7:30 p.m. CT on Sunday, July 3, live on ESPN2. The family-friendly event, produced by Chicago-based Intersport, promises excitement and entertainment, and it will conclude with the 32nd annual Omaha World-Herald fireworks display.

The Home Run Derby will showcase some of college baseball’s premier sluggers, all of whom have ranked among the nation’s home run leaders during the 2016 season.

Deichmann, a sophomore from Metairie, La., will be the third LSU player to take part in the event, as Mason Katz advanced to the final round in 2012 and Matt Gaudet was on the inaugural Home Run Derby roster in 2010.

Deichmann was selected in the 26th round of the 2016 MLB Draft by the Minnesota Twins, but he has elected to return to LSU for his junior season. He appeared in 64 games in 2016 (62 starts), batting .288 (68-for-236) with 14 doubles, three triples, 11 homers, 57 RBI, 45 runs and five steals, finishing as the Tigers’ leader in homers and RBI.

Deichmann, who collected 26 RBI in his final 21 games of the season, was LSU’s leading hitter in postseason games (SEC and NCAA Tournament combined), batting .385 (15-for-39) in 10 games with one double, five homers, 16 RBI and seven runs. He hit .522 (12-for-23) in LSU’s six NCAA Tournament games with four homers, 13 RBI and four runs.

Deichmann was named the Most Outstanding Player of the NCAA Baton Rouge Regional, batting .600 (9-for-15) in four games with three homers, 10 RBI, three runs scored and a .647 on-base percentage. He launched a two-run homer in the seventh inning of the regional championship game versus Rice, erasing a 2-1 deficit as the Tigers went on to a 5-2 win.

Deichmann blasted a game-tying solo home run to lead off the bottom of the ninth inning of LSU’s SEC Tournament opener against Tennessee, as the Tigers went on to score another run in the ninth to post a 5-4 walk-off win.
