Notes on the Tigers
LSU won 11 of its final 12 games – including eight of its final nine SEC games — to close the 2016 regular season, including a 2-1 series victory over top-ranked Florida last weekend in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … LSU is the No. 5 seed in this week’s SEC Tournament, and the Tigers will face No. 12 seed Tennessee in a first-round game Tuesday in Hoover, Ala. … LSU has won 11 SEC Tournament titles in its history, including five of the past eight tournament championships … LSU batted .322 (39-for-121) in its four games last week with seven doubles, two triples, one homer and 21 runs … freshman rightfielder Antoine Duplantis batted .500 (8-for-16) in the Tigers’ four games last week with one triple, two RBI, three runs and a .579 on-base percentage … junior second baseman Cole Freeman batted .462 (6-for-13) last week with one double, two RBI, five runs and a .533 on-base percentage … Freeman hit .471 (16-for-34) over the final 12 games of the regular season with one double, one triple, one homer, seven RBI and 11 runs … junior centerfielder Jake Fraley batted .412 (7-for-17) in LSU’s four games last week with one double, one homer, four RBI and three runs … Fraley enters this week’s SEC Tournament riding a 17-game hitting streak … sophomore first baseman Greg Deichmann hit .357 (5-for-14) last week with two doubles, five RBI and one run scored … Deichmann hit .364 (4-for-11) in the Florida series with one double, four RBI and one run scored … sophomore designated hitter Bryce Jordan has been hit by a pitch 23 times this season, the most by an LSU player since at least 1984, when hit-by-pitch records were first kept at LSU … the LSU pitching staff has been especially effective over the past 12 games, recording a 3.03 ERA in 107 innings with 79 strikeouts and a .239 opponent batting average … junior left-hander Jared Poche’ defeated top-ranked Florida on Friday night, limiting the Gators to two runs – one earned – on seven hits in six innings with three walks and four strikeouts … junior right-hander Riley Smith earned his first career SEC win with a relief victory over the Gators in Game 1 of the series … the game began on Thursday, was suspended due to severe weather, and resumed on Saturday with Smith taking the mound for the Tigers … Smith worked three innings, allowing three runs on four hits with two walks and no strikeouts … junior right-hander Parker Bugg earned the save in relief of Smith, blanking the Gators in a perfect three-inning outing with two strikeouts.
