Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 5 this week in the Baseball America poll after posting a 4-1 mark in its five games last week … LSU recorded a SEC series sweep over Missouri to move into second place in the SEC Western Division, one game behind Texas A&M … LSU is also only two games behind Florida and South Carolina in the overall SEC standings … the Tigers have now won 17 of their past 21 SEC road series … LSU batted .342 in the Missouri series (40-for-117) with three doubles, one triple, five homers and six stolen bases … all three LSU starting pitchers worked six innings, the bullpen earned two three-inning saves and the Tigers did not commit an error in the series … sophomore DH/catcher Bryce Jordan helped lead LSU to four wins in five games last week, batting .467 (7-for-15) with one double, two homers, nine RBI, six runs, a .933 slugging percentage and a .600 on-base percentage … Jordan batted .400 (4-for-10) in LSU’s three-game sweep at Missouri with two homers, eight RBI and three runs scored … his three-run homer in the fifth inning on Friday night against Missouri starter Reggie McClain highlighted a five-run inning as LSU erased a 2-1 deficit and went on to post a 7-5 victory … Jordan drove in three runs in Sunday’s win with a two-run single and a solo homer … Jordan is batting .312 on the year with four doubles, three homers and 20 RBI … he has a .455 on-base percentage and has been hit by a pitch on 15 occasions already this season … junior centerfielder Jake Fraley hit .467 (7-for-15) in the Missouri series with one double, one RBI and three runs … junior shortstop Kramer Robertson batted .462 (6-for-13) against Missouri with one double, two RBI and seven runs scored … senior left-hander John Valek III turned in an excellent outing at Missouri on Sunday, as improved to 6-1 this season … Valek limited Mizzou to two runs on five hits in six innings with no walks and five strikeouts … Valek has issued just six walks this season in 50 innings of work … junior left-hander Jared Poche’ improved his career LSU record to 23-8, as he defeated Missouri on Friday … Poche’ worked six innings and allowed five runs on nine hits with two walks and five strikeouts … pitching in his home state of Missouri for the first time as a college player, sophomore right-hander Alex Lange outdueled Mizzou ace Tanner Houck, working six innings and allowing four runs on seven hits with three walks and six strikeouts … LSU relievers Hunter Newman and Parker Bugg each recorded three-inning saves in the sweep at Missouri … Newman worked three scoreless innings on Friday night, allowing just one hit with no walks and two strikeouts … Bugg pitched three innings on Saturday afternoon, limiting Mizzou to one run on three hits in three innings with no walks and two strikeouts … the No. 36 jersey of former LSU All-American first baseman Eddy Furniss will be retired on Friday night prior to the Tigers’ game with Mississippi State in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … Furniss joins coach Skip Bertman (No. 15) and pitcher Ben McDonald (No. 19) on LSU Baseball’s retired jersey list.
