BATON ROUGE – LSU gymnast Sarah Finnegan was named Southeastern Conference Freshman of the Week for the third time this season, the league office announced Tuesday.
A native of Lee’s Summit, Missouri, Finnegan shined on all three events she competed in the quad meet victory at Texas Woman’s on March 12.
Finnegan earned a career-high tying 9.95 on bars, a career-best 9.925 on vault and a 9.90 on beam to help LSU improve to 13-2 overall with a solid 197.825 road score against TWU, Oregon State and New Hampshire.
Finnegan was the only freshman in the SEC last week to earn three scores of 9.90 or higher.
She captured the bars and beam titles and placed second on vault behind teammate Ashleigh Gnat who earned a 9.95.
Finnegan has seven individual titles this season with four on beam and three on bars, and because of her great performances she has climbed to No. 8 in the bars national rankings and No. 9 on beam.
She also earned SEC Freshman of the Week after stellar outings against Oklahoma in the season opener on Jan. 9 and at Florida on Feb. 26.
Third-ranked LSU is set to open postseason competition Saturday at the SEC Championship in North Little Rock, Arkansas. The second-seeded Tigers will take on No. 1 seed Florida, No. 3 Alabama and No. 4 Auburn in the second session at 5 p.m. CT inside Verizon Arena.
