Notes on the Tigers
LSU posted a 3-1 mark in last week’s games, including a series victory over Ball State in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … junior centerfielder Jake Fraley helped lead LSU to three wins in four games last week, batting .471 (8-for-17) with one double, three RBI, six runs, four steals and a.526 on-base percentage … Fraley batted .429 (6-for-14) in LSU’s series victory over Ball State with one double, three RBI, four runs and three stolen bases … he is LSU’s leading hitter this season, batting .400 (24-for-60) with two doubles, three triples, one homer, 10 RBI, 21 runs and 11 stolen bases … Fraley is presently riding a 10-game hitting streak, and he has reached base safely in all 15 of the Tigers’ games this season … freshman rightfielder Antoine Duplantis extended his hitting streak to 15 games, as he has at least one hit in each of the Tigers’ 15 games this season … Duplantis is batting .386 (22-for-57) on the year with five doubles, one triple, seven RBI, 11 runs and four stolen bases … sophomore leftfielder Beau Jordan batted .417 (5-for-12) in four games last week with two doubles, four RBI and two runs … sophomore catcher Michael Papierski batted .417 (5-for-12) in three games last week with one double, four RBI and two runs … Papierski posted career highs of three hits and three RBI in Sunday’s 10-6 LSU win over Ball State; he also scored a run and threw out a runner attempting to steal second base … junior shortstop Kramer Robertson, the Tigers’ lead-off hitter, batted .400 (6-for-15) last week with one double, three RBI, five runs and a .526 on-base percentage … as a team, the Tigers hit .319 (44-for-138) in four games last week with 26 runs, 10 doubles, one triple and one home run … senior left-hander John Valek III earned his fourth win in four starts this season, defeating Ball State on Sunday … Valek worked five innings, limiting the Cardinals to one run on eight hits with no walks and two strikeouts … Valek is 4-0 this season with a 1.99 ERA, and he’s recorded just one walk with 18 strikeouts in 22.2 innings … freshman right-hander Caleb Gilbert worked two shutout innings in two appearances last week and recorded his first collegiate save on Tuesday against Louisiana Tech … Gilbert did not allow a hit or a walk in his two appearances, and he fired three strikeouts … junior right-hander Hunter Newman also worked two shutout relief innings last week in two appearances against Ball State, allowing no hits with one walk and two strikeouts … sophomore preseason All-American right-hander Alex Lange defeated Ball State on Saturday, limiting the Cardinals to three runs on five hits in six innings with four walks and five strikeouts.
