COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Sophomore Madison Sthamann qualified for NCAA Championships on platform after finishing fourth overall with a two-list score of 563.35 at Zone ‘D’ Diving Regional Wednesday afternoon.
In addition to Sthamann’s bid to the championships, senior Cassie Weil also earned a spot on platform. Weil finished in third place with a score of 574.65.
“It was a big day for us,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “To get Madison in for the second year in a row is huge. We are excited about her performance today. They dove really well in qualifying, and I’m optimistic that they’ll perform well at NCAA’s.”
Freshman Matt Phillip closed out the qualifying with a strong performance on platform. Phillip finished 11th with a two-list score of 654.70.
“There was a tremendous amount of development for the men,” Shaffer said. We were just a little short on all three levels this week though. We’ll take this experience and set our sights on next year. Our level of competition and expectations are higher. We’ve already set goals for next year.”
Divers Weil, Sthamann and Lizzie Cui join the eight swimmers for NCAA Championships March 17-19 at Georgia Tech Aquatic Center.
