COLLEGE STATION, Texas — Senior Cassie Weil finished third on three-meter springboard with a two-list score of 677.30 to earn a spot at the 2016 NCAA Swimming and Diving Championships Tuesday afternoon at Texas A&M’s Student Recreation Center.

“I’m really happy for Cassie to get her fourth consecutive berth to the NCAA Championships,” LSU diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “Now we’ll focus on platform tomorrow and look to earn a couple of more spots.”

In addition to Weil’s performance, freshman Lizzie Cui also qualified for her second event with an eight-place finish on three-meter. Cui tallied a final score of 639.15 on the springboard event.

The LSU men had another remarkable performance. Junior Andrew Suchla just missed the top-seven with a two-list score of 674.40. Suchla finished in ninth place overall. Freshman Matt McClellan also reached the final and finished 10th with a score of 688.15.

“The men performed really well today. Andrew came up just short but showed a lot of fight today. He has fought through an injury and remained focused,” Shaffer said. “I can’t tell you how many people who have commented on the development of the men throughout this year. We came up short but there are a lot of positives about this experience.”

For the remaining women, Allie Alter finished 24th (268.10), Rileigh Knox finished 32nd (258.90) and Katie Lagarde finished 50th (211.45).

The divers return to the pool Wednesday for platform. Sophomore Madison Sthamann is looking to earn her NCAA bid. Freshman Matt Phillip finaled at SEC Championships in the event and should make a run for a spot at NCAA’s.
