BATON ROUGE, La.LSU, ranked 37th in the nation, took a 6-1 victory over the Lamar Cardinals Sunday, following a win against Stetson in the previous match at the LSU Tennis Complex.

“I thought that some guys did a good job in that early match building some confidence,” said Head Coach Jeff Brown. “Lamar certainly pushed us, they were a little stronger team this afternoon and some guys were really able to gain some confidence based off of a good result.”

In a quick win, Andrew Korinek and Gabor Csonka started off the victories for LSU, facing off against Juuso Laitinen and Sebastian Santibanez on court three, winning 6-1. The No. 17 duo of Boris Arias and Jordan Daigle finished the doubles point for the Tigers on court one, defeating Jeandre Hoogenboezem and Nikita Lis 6-4.

On court five for singles, Andrew Korinek took down Jeandre Hoogenboezem 6-1 in the first set. In the second set Hoogenboezem came back fighting but Korinek was able to finish off the match 7-6 (7-2) to give the Tigers their first point in singles.

Boris Arias held a tight first set against Sebastian Santibanez of Lamar but pulled out a 7-6 (7-4) victory to then make a 6-0 run in the second set to push the Tigers to a 3-0 advantage over the Cardinals.

Gabor Csonka saw time on court one Sunday for the first time in the dual season, where he faced Michael Feucht. Csonka kept a close match but fell 6-4, 7-5 to his opponent to give Lamar their only team point.

Freshman Nikola Samardzic clinched for the Tigers on court six. After losing his first set 3-6, Samardzic played an extremely competitive second set to win 7-6 (7-1) to push the match to a third set. His intensity lasted in the third set to give him a 6-2 victory to secure the win for his team.

Playing through to the final court, Justin Butsch won his 7-6 (7-5), 2-6, 6-4 match with the match point coming down to a double fault from Nikita Lis of Lamar.

Next up for LSU, the team travels up the road to face an instate opponent in Tulane.

“This is their best team in the last 15-20 years with the No.1 player in the country who plays court one for them,” Head Coach Jeff Brown said. “It’s going to be a great challenge and should be a fun match. We are looking forward to it.”
