BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — Senior forward Akilah Bethel earned SEC Community Service Team honors for her dedication and commitment off the court as announced by the conference office Wednesday. This marks the 18th season of the Community Service Team for SEC women’s basketball.
Bethel has participated in a wide-range of community events on her own and with her Lady Tiger teammates, including the Alzheimer’s Service Walk/Run to Remember and the Arc of Baton Rouge, which provides services for children with Autism, Down Syndrome, Asperger’s, Cerebral Palsy and other similar conditions.
Bethel and her teammates also spent time at the Halloween BOOzar which provides local children with a safe and fun Halloween experience with games, candy, autographs, and interaction with their favorite student-athletes.
A native of Baltimore, Maryland, Bethel has volunteered with Girls on the Run, a program that teaches life skills through dynamic, interactive lessons and running games. She has made visits to local schools and a youth homeless shelter and has volunteered at the LSU Museum of Art. In addition, she joined her team’s participation in Thanksgiving with the Tigers, an event where each LSU athletic team adopts an underprivileged child for the holidays and provides the child and their family with a Thanksgiving style meal served by the student-athletes as well as games, activities and gift exchanges.
In addition, Bethel has participated in LSU Feeds Africa and the Dance Marathon of LSU, the largest philanthropic, student-run organization supporting the children and families of The Lake Children’s Hospital.
