Hambrick, Gnat Earn SEC Weekly Honors

BATON ROUGE – LSU sophomore Myia Hambrick was named Southeastern Conference Gymnast of the Week, and junior Ashleigh Gnat was named SEC Specialist of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.

It is the third time this season Hambrick has earned SEC Gymnast of the Week recognition, and it is Gnat’s first honor of the year.

Both played integral roles in LSU’s season-high 197.825 in a victory over Auburn on Feb. 19 that extended LSU’s streak to 20 straight home wins dating back to the beginning of the 2014 season.

For the first time in her career Hambrick tallied a 9.90 or higher in all four events in the same meet on the way to tying her career high in the all-around with a 39.625. Hambrick won her team-leading fourth all-around title, and her all-around total was the highest of anyone in the SEC last week.

The Temple, Georgia native captured the bars title with a career-best tying 9.925, and she tied for the beam title with a 9.90. She placed second on vault with a 9.90 and tied for sixth on floor with a 9.90 to contribute to LSU’s school-record 49.700 total.

With three titles against Auburn, Hambrick increased her season total to 10 individual titles.

Gnat competed on vault, beam and floor against Auburn, and she won at least a share of the title on all three events. Gnat captured the floor title with a perfect 10.0 score to become the only gymnast in the nation with three perfect 10s this season. She already has two 10s on vault this year.

Her 10.0 in the anchor spot on floor led LSU to a school-record tying 49.700 in the event.

Gnat also earned a near-perfect 9.975 on vault to take home the title, and she tied teammate Myia Hambrick for the beam crown with a 9.90.

With three titles in three events against Auburn, Gnat upped her season total to a team-leading 14 individual titles.

No. 7 LSU (8-2, 4-1 SEC) travels to face No. 2 Florida (6-1, 4-1) at 6 p.m. CT Friday in O’Connell Center. The meet will be carried live on the SEC Network.
