Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked in the Top 10 in the college baseball polls released Monday; the Tigers’ highest ranking is No. 5 in the Perfect Game poll … the Tigers posted a three-game sweep over Cincinnati last weekend to open the 2016 season … sophomore right-hander Alex Lange was named SEC Pitcher of the Week on Monday, as he improved his LSU career record to 13-0 after defeating Cincinnati on Saturday in his 2016 season debut … Lange worked 6.2 shutout innings, allowing just one hit with three walks and nine strikeouts in the Tigers’ 4-0 win … Cincinnati’s only hit against Lange was a single, as he limited the Bearcats to a .048 batting average in the contest and did not allow a baserunner to advance beyond second base … Lange retired 10 consecutive hitters beginning with the fourth inning through the first out of the seventh inning … catcher Jordan Romero, making his NCAA Division I collegiate debut in last weekend’s series versus Cincinnati, batted .750 (3-for-4) in two games with one homer, four RBI and two runs scored … Romero, a transfer from LSU-Eunice, was the hero on two occasions during th e Tigers’ 6-5, 12-inning victory on Friday night – he delivered a two-out single in the bottom of the ninth inning to tie the game at 3-3 and send it into extra innings, and he then lifted the Tigers to victory in the 12th with a two-out, walk-off single … Romero also launched his first career home run in LSU’s 12-4 win over the Bearcats on Sunday … LSU blasted five home runs in the weekend series, including four in Sunday’s 12-4 victory … all five homers were the first for the respective players in their LSU careers – sophomore first baseman Greg Deichmann, freshman third baseman O’Neal Lochridge, junior catcher Jordan Romero, junior designated hitter Bryce Adams and sophomore leftfielder Beau Jordan … the dinger by Adams was a grand slam, the first by an LSU player since May 13, 2014, when shortstop Alex Bregman unloaded a grand slam in the fourth inning against Northwestern State; infielder Tyler Moore hit a grand slam in the first inning of that same 2014 contest versus Northwestern State … the four-homer output on Sunday marked the first time the Tigers launched four dingers in a game since May 13, 2014, when LSU belted five home runs in the aforementioned game against Northwestern State, a 27-0 LSU victory in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field … junior centerfielder Jake Fraley enjoyed a productive weekend at the plate, batting .385 (5-for-13) with two triples, one RBI, two steals and five runs scored … junior third baseman/shortstop Cole Freeman hit .400 (4-for-10) with one double, two RBI and two stolen bases … senior left-hander John Valek III, a transfer from the University of Akron, earned the win in his LSU debut on Sunday, limiting Cincinnati to two earned runs on four hits in 5.2 innings with no walks and seven strikeouts.
