CCACSA Hosts SAAC Retreat for Spring Semester

BATON ROUGE, La. – The LSU Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) board met with members of the LSU Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program to discuss their plans for the 2016 spring semester. The meeting took place in the library of the Cox Communication Academic Center for Student-Athletes building.

During the meeting student-athletes took the time to bounce ideas off one another about community service, Tiger Nights, Life Skills events, and many more topics. One particular community service event was called Heart of the Tigers, which will take place at the Southside Gardens Retirement Community & Assisted Living Center. Heart of the Tigers is a Valentine’s Day ball that allows for the student-athletes to interact with citizens in the community.

Later on, the SAAC committee was forced to make some tough decision about which student-athletes should be nominated for the Mikey’s Nominations. The Mikey’s Nomination includes a variety of awards, such as Female Rookie of the Year, Male Rookie of the Year, and Play of the Year. Afterwards, the SAAC board then decided to discuss the criteria for the Male and Female Mikey Leadership Award.

“We are excited for the student-athletes to have the ability to vote on and create their own criteria for different awards and truly have a say in this year’s Academic Gala featuring The Mikey’s. It will showcase their creative ability and they have enjoyed being part of the planning team for this great event,” said the Amy Werdine, the graduate assistant for the Shaquille O’Neal Life Skills Program.

The Cox Communications Academic Center for Student-Athletes is a 54,000 square foot facility comprised of an academic affairs, student affairs and an information technology team, serving more than 530 student-athletes. The purpose is to provide an all-inclusive, student-centered support structure for all student-athletes from matriculation, through graduation and life beyond.
