BATON ROUGE, La. – Former LSU pitcher Doug Thompson has been named color analyst for the LSU Sports Radio Network broadcasts of the Tigers’ home baseball games this season.
Thompson will join play-by-play announcer Chris Blair in the booth on Friday, February 19, when Blair makes his debut as the “Voice of the Tigers” for LSU’s season opener versus Cincinnati in Alex Box Stadium, Skip Bertman Field.
LSU baseball communications director Bill Franques, who has been a part of the radio network team since 1991, will continue to work as analyst on the broadcasts of the Tigers’ road games.
The 39-year-old Thompson, a native of Biloxi, Miss., pitched at LSU in 1997 and 1998, and he was the winning pitching in the ’97 College World Series championship game, a 13-6 victory over Alabama. He earned a kinesiology degree from LSU in 1999.
The right-hander posted a 24-8 LSU career record in 49 appearances (37 starts) with a 4.44 ERA and 282 strikeouts in 245.1 innings, helping lead the Tigers to the College World Series in consecutive seasons. He received 1998 second-team all-America and second-team all-SEC recognition.
He earned the win in relief in the 1997 National Championship Game against Alabama, allowing two runs on five hits over the final 4.2 innings with one walk and seven strikeouts. His final strikeout of Alabama catcher Matt Frick ended the game and gave LSU its fourth national championship in seven seasons.
Thompson was selected by the Colorado Rockies in the 1998 Major League Draft, and he pitched six seasons in the minor leagues, advancing to the AAA level with the Colorado Springs Sky Sox.
The February 19 season opener pregame radio show will begin at 6:30 p.m. CT, with first pitch scheduled for 7 p.m. CT.
