BATON ROUGE, La. – After finishing the month with a 5-0 record and third-place finish at the Art Adamson Invitational, the LSU women’s swimming and diving team was named the BASF Team Chemistry MVP Award winner for November.
The Lady Tigers began the month by traveling to west to take on Northern Arizona and Wyoming. In the final meet at NAU’s Aquatic center, the LSU women combined to break 11 pool records. Kara Kopcso led the way for the Lady Tigers with four individual wins, a second-place finish, two relay victories and three pool records. Kopcso contributed 40 individual points and 22 relay points over the course of the meet. Senior Megan Cox also won three individual events and broke three individual pool records. Diver Cassie Weil contributed with a dominating performance on three-meter with a record score of 339.65.
After starting the month out strong, the women returned home to defeat No. 21 SMU, 187-103. Junior Devon Dabney swept the distance events for the Lady Tigers. Cox also swept the 100 and 200 freestyle events against SMU. Weil once again had a strong performance with a sweep on the one-meter and three-meter springboard events.
At the midseason meet, Kopcso led the way for the women by finishing second in the 200 fly, third in the 200 IM and fourth in the 100 fly. Kopcso contributed 48 points for the women’s team, which was the second-most by a female athlete. The Mandeville, Louisiana, native broke the school record in the 200 IM with a time of 1:56.55. In diving, Madison Sthamann won platform with a score of 262.50. Her victory marked the third win in a row on platform at the Art Adamson Invitational for a Lady Tiger diver. Weil also finished second on platform and three-meter.
The entire squad returns to action for the spring schedule January 9 against Kentucky and Virginia Tech. The team returns home to Baton Rouge for the final SEC dual meets against Missouri on Jan. 14, and Texas A&M on Jan. 23.
