In the first of a six-part series introducing the LSU softball freshman class, today we get to know utility player Elyse Thornhill.
Why did you choose to sign with LSU?
I grew up in Baton Rouge, and I have always supported the LSU Tigers. I always dreamed of coming to LSU and proudly wearing purple and gold. I feel like LSU is my home away from home, and my teammates are my sisters. I also like being close to home so that I can go home when my mom cooks good food!
What do you like most about LSU and Baton Rouge?
I have always loved LSU and the surrounding Baton Rouge area. I love how close the Mississippi River is to campus because it serves as a beautiful walk backdrop at night. I love Baton Rouge so much and didn’t want to leave home which is part of the reason I chose LSU.
What is your favorite part about being an athlete at LSU?
My favorite part about being an athlete at LSU is the fact that all of the athletes from every sport are so close. Specifically, the LSU Softball team is such a close family. I know that if I have a bad day in class or on the field my teammates will always be there to lift me up.
What are your favorite hobbies outside of softball?
I like to read sci-fi books when I have free time. I also like to go deer hunting and fishing with my dad.
What is your favorite LSU tradition?
My favorite LSU tradition is singing the Alma Mater. During football games, I think signing the Alma Mater unites everyone in the stadium right before the start of the game. Also, I really enjoy singing the Alma Mater after the Softball team wins because it helps remind me that I am representing LSU.
Why did you choose your uniform number?
My very first fastpitch coach gave me #3 because that is the number Babe Ruth wore with the Yankees. When I switched travel teams they already had a player who wore #3 so I took #9, which is three times three. It has stuck with me ever since.
