BATON ROUGE – LSU linebacker Deion Jones and defensive end Arden Key have been recognized by the Southeastern Conference as two of the league’s players of the week for their performance in the Tigers’ 19-7 win over Texas A&M on Saturday.
Jones, a senior from New Orleans, was tabbed as the SEC’s Defensive Player of the Week after recording 11 tackles, 1.5 tackles for loss and a half-sack in LSU victory. Jones also added a pair of pass breakups and a quarterback hurry as the Tigers limited the Aggies to just 250 yards of offense.
Key, from Atlanta, Ga., was named the SEC Freshman of the Week after posting a career-best eight tackles to go with 1.5 sacks in the win over the Aggies. Key added three quarterback hurries as the Tigers limited the Aggies to just 103 yards in the second half.
Trailing 7-6 at halftime, LSU’s defense didn’t allow the Aggies inside its 30-yard line and forced three punt, a turnover on downs, intercepted a pass and A&M missed a 54-yard field goal on its six second half possessions.
The seven points and 250 total yards represented the best defensive effort of the year for the Tigers, who improved to 8-3 overall and 5-3 in SEC action with the win.
