BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s tennis head coach Jeff Brown announced Monday the Tigers have signed Gabor Csonka, an international standout who played his freshman season at NCAA Division II Ohio Dominican University.
A 5-10 southpaw from Nyiregyhaza, Hungary, Csonka excelled in his freshman season for Ohio Dominican. He completed the 2014-15 campaign with a 23-1 overall singles record, including a perfect 15-0 record at the No. 1 singles position, and he also finished 21-2 in doubles play.
During his junior tennis career Csonka defeated three opponents in the Top 50 in the ITF junior singles world rankings. As a competitor in the men’s division, Csonka posted wins over 12 players in singles who were ranked in the ATP rankings, including two wins over players ranked in the Top 300 in the world.
“Anytime you can bring in someone who has wins over players in the Top 300 in the world, it’s a big deal,” LSU assistant coach Danny Bryan said. “On top of that, Gabor is a humble kid that is committed to improving. We are excited he decided to become a Tiger.”
Csonka, who joins the team in the fall, will be eligible to compete immediately as a sophomore for the Tigers.
Csonka joins Julián Saborio and Cameron Andry as talented new additions to the roster for the 2015-16 season.
Saborio plays Davis Cup for Costa Rica and recently reached the semifinals of a futures event in which he defeated two players ranked in the Top 800 of the men’s world rankings.
Andry, a Baton Rouge native, is a four-star prospect who ranks as the No. 1 player in Louisiana by tennisrecruiting.net. Andry completed his high school career at St. Michael as a four-time state champion in singles.
