BATON ROUGE – LSU men’s tennis head coach Jeff Brown announced Monday the Tigers have received the national letter of intent of Julián Saborio.
A highly-regarded international prospect, Saborio plays Davis Cup for Costa Rica.
Saborio reached the semifinals of a futures event in February by defeating two players ranked in the Top 800 of the men’s world rankings.
“We are very excited to add someone of Julian’s caliber,” Brown said. “First of all, he’s from a great family, and, secondly, Julian’s a great kid. He has the kind of personality that lights up a room.
“As far as his tennis is concerned, Julian plays with an aggressive style, and he has a big serve and forehand. He has huge upside, and we are glad he became a Tiger because we look forward to working with him.”
A native of San José, Costa Rica, Saborio won a grade 4 ITF junior event in June 2014, and he also added a grade b3 ITF doubles championship last year.
Saborio, a 6-3 right-hander, currently ranks 1,186 in the ITF men’s singles world rankings. Before that he reached a peak of 230 in the ITF junior world rankings in 2014.
Saborio is expected to enroll at LSU in the fall and compete as a freshman in the 2015-16 season.
