Three Teams Earn NCAA Public Recognition Award

BATON ROUGE – The LSU men’s tennis, men’s cross country and women’s golf teams received an NCAA Public Recognition Award Wednesday for its exceptional work in the classroom as part of the NCAA’s Academic Performance Program.

This year marks the fifth time that the LSU men’s tennis team has received the NCAA Public Recognition Award, while women’s golf earned the award for the third time and men’s cross country for the second time.

The LSU women’s golf team is one of just three teams from the Southeastern Conference to be honored with the NCAA Public Recognition Award while also advancing to the NCAA Championships. LSU is joined by fellow SEC schools South Carolina and Alabama in the unique honor.

The Tiger tennis team also reached the NCAA Tournament this year as they too achieved outstanding results in the classroom and in competition.

Each year the NCAA honors selected sports teams by publicly recognizing their latest multiyear NCAA Academic Progress Rate (APR). This announcement is part of the overall NCAA academic reform effort and is intended to highlight teams that demonstrate a commitment to academic progress and retention of student-athletes by achieving the top APRs within their respective sports. Specifically, these teams posted multiyear APRs in the top 10 percent of all squads in each sport.

The APR provides a real-time look at a team’s academic success each semester by tracking the academic progress of each student-athlete on scholarship. The APR accounts for eligibility, retention and graduation and provides a measure of each team’s academic performance.

The most recent APRs are multi-year rates based on scores from the 2010-11, 2011-12, 2012-13, and 2013-14 academic years.
