Notes on the Tigers
LSU is ranked No. 1 in the Perfect Game poll this week, marking the fifth week this season the Tigers are No. 1 in at least one poll … LSU was 4-1 in its games last week, including an SEC series victory over Auburn over the weekend … senior catcher Kade Scivicque batted .421 (8-for-19) in five games last week with two doubles, four RBI and one run … Scivicque extended his hitting streak to 20 games, the longest by an LSU player since 2013, when shortstop Alex Bregman had a 23-game hit streak … Scivicque is batting .382 (34-for-89) during the 20-game streak with seven doubles, one homer and 16 RBI … Scivicque is LSU’s leading hitter on the year, batting .386 (49-for-127) with 11 doubles, four homers and 27 RBI … senior leftfielder/DH Chris Sciambra hit .400 (8-for-20) last week with two doubles, two homers, five RBI and eight runs … Sciambra, who had just one career homer entering the 2015 season, launched dingers in back-to-back games last week versus New Orleans and Northwestern State … junior rightfielder Mark Laird was the Tigers’ leading hitter in the Auburn series, batting .455 (5-for-11) with two doubles, two RBI, three runs and two stolen bases … sophomore right-hander Hunter Newman earned his first career save with a brilliant outing against Auburn on Friday … Newman worked the final 3.1 innings of the game, walking the first batter he faced before retiring the next 10 Auburn hitters in a row … Newman recorded five strikeouts in the outing and maintained his cumulative ERA at 0.00 … he has not allowed an earned run this season in 18.2 innings of work, and he is 2-0 on the year with four walks, 19 strikeouts and a .169 opponent batting average … senior left-hander Zac Person earned the win over Auburn Sunday in just his second career SEC start … Person blanked Auburn in three innings of work, allowing just one single with no walks and two strikeouts … he was credited with the win since it had been pre-determined that LSU would use at least three pitchers in the game … Person was followed in the game by sophomore right-hander Parker Bugg, who worked four innings and limited Auburn to one run on five hits with no walks and two strikeouts … freshman right-hander Jesse Stallings pitched the final three innings, allowing one run on three hits with no walks and two strikeouts … LSU’s streak of reaching double-figures in hits ended at 12 games in the Tigers’ 3-2 win over Auburn on Friday … the double-digit hits streak was the longest by an LSU team since the 2004 club had 10 or more hits in 13 consecutive games.
