Sand Volleyball Sweeps Day 2 of Blazer Duals

BIRMINGHAM, Ala. — The LSU sand volleyball team (10-7) claimed two more match victories in the final day of the Blazer Duals Tournament at UAB this weekend. The Lady Tigers swept both Spring Hill and UNO 5-0 to give the team their sixth win in their last seven matches.

“We’ve been working really hard on our mentality and some pretty simple areas of weakness that we need to address,” said head coach Russell Brock. “It’s been a breakthrough to play in tight matches and maintain our composure. It was refreshing to not only play well against good teams on Saturday, but it was great to see us play as good as we have all year today against opponents we feel like we should beat.”

The Tigers started off the day with a sweep of Spring Hill. Riley Young and Emma Hiller defeated Andria Dytrych and Catherine Milwee by scores of 21-8 and 21-11 on court five. On court four, Carly Morris and Katarina Raicevic swept Hannah Masoner and Maddie Seuzeneau 21-11, 21-12 to give LSU a 2-0 lead. The team extended their lead on the final three courts as Helen Boyle and Cheyenne Wood dominated in straight sets 21-6, 21-9. On court two, Callan Molle and Cati Leak won 21-10, 21-8, and Katie Lindelow and Mandi Orellana helped capped off the sweep with straight set victories.

In their second match, LSU picked up where they left off for another dominating win against UNO. Young and Hiller tallied LSU’s first point of the match, winning in straight sets on court five 21-9, 21-10. The duo of Raicevic and Morris helped give the Tigers a 2-0 lead with straight set victories 21-10, 21-9. The two point cushion didn’t phase the Tigers as they closed out the match with stellar performances from the top three pairs. Wood and Boyle won on court three 21-12, 21-10 for the team’s third point of the match. Molle and Leak claimed victory in straight sets on court two, while Lindelow and Orellana finished the day with a pair of victories 21-15, 21-10, giving LSU the 5-0 sweep.

The Tigers have a week off before returning to action against Carson Newman on Tuesday, April 7 in Tallahassee.

“There are a lot of things that we are excited to work on this weekend,” said coach Brock. “We need to improve to be the team that we want to be. We’re going to take advantage knowing that we don’t have to compete this weekend, so we’ll be able to train that much harder this week.”
