BATON ROUGE – LSU senior gymnast Rheagan Courville was tabbed the Southeastern Conference Specialist of the Week while Myia Hambrick was named SEC Freshman of the Week, the league office announced Tuesday.
Courville and Hambrick played integral parts in LSU’s school-record 198.375 performance to lead the Tigers to victory over Minnesota last week.
A native of Temple, Ga., Hambrick earned her first SEC weekly honor by recording career highs in all four events and the all-around against the Golden Gophers. Hambrick posted a 9.925 on vault, 9.875 on bars, 9.90 on beam, 9.875 on floor and 39.575 in the all-around.
Hambrick’s 39.575 not only ranks as the highest all-around total of any freshman in the SEC this season, but it also ranks as the second best of any freshman across the nation.
Her all-around is also the highest total by an LSU freshman since Sarie Morrison tallied a 39.575 against Georgia on Feb. 18, 2011.
Courville earned her fourth SEC weekly honor of the season after her stellar performance against Minnesota.
Limited to vault and bars last week, Courville excelled in both events to win the titles. She scored the third perfect 10.0 of her career on vault to tie Jessie Jordan for the event title, and Courville notched her eighth bars title in nine meets this season with a 9.925.
Courville is only the third gymnast in LSU history to post at least three perfect 10.0 scores on vault, joining Jennifer Wood (nine) and Ashleigh Clare-Kearney (four).
Courville’s bars title is the 18th of her career, placing her in a tie with Clare-Kearney for the second-most bars titles in LSU history.
Courville is up to 21 individual titles, the most of any gymnast in the SEC this season.
No. 3 LSU (11-1, 7-0 SEC) will wrap up the regular season when the Tigers travel to Shreveport, La., to compete at Centenary, along with New Hampshire, at 7 p.m. CT Friday in the Gold Dome.
Tickets will be sold on meet day at the arena box office.
Gymnastike will provide live video of the meet to all Gold level members at Gymnastike.org.
