Swimming & Diving to Host Quad Meet

BATON ROUGE, La. — The 20th ranked LSU women’s swimming and diving team hosts Houston, Tulane and Rice Friday and Saturday at the LSU Natatorium for the annual quad meet.
Competition begins Friday at 5 p.m. for Ladies Night where the first 100 fans will receive an LSU Swim and Dive tote bag. Saturday’s events begin at 11 a.m. and the first 200 fans will receive “Pack The Nat” t-shirts. Mike the Tigers and LSU Cheerleaders will also make a special appearance on the second day of competition.

The Lady Tigers complete the tough month of January and the regular season with the quad meet. The month of competition has featured dual meets against SMU, No. 7 Tennessee and No. 4 Texas A&M.

“We will mix things up a little bit. There are some athletes that like to stay in their events and there are some who like to change it up,” LSU Swimming coach Dave Geyer said. “Our objective is to race hard no matter what event we are in and to win as many events as possible.”

LSU dropped the dual meet finale to Texas A&M last week but sophomore Kara Kopcso continued her dominating season in the fly events. Kopcso swept the fly events for the third time this season. The Mandeville, La. native has now won at least the 200 fly in meets against No. 4 Texas A&M, No. 7 Tennessee, No. 8 Florida, No. 10 Auburn and No. 25 Alabama.

Senior Amber Carter finished second in all three individual events that she competed in against A&M. Carter finished the 50 free in 22.88, the 100 free in 50.45, and the 100 fly in 53.82.

Junior Caley Oquist also added a pair of second-place finishes in the 100 back (54.51) and 200 back (1:59.29).

Alex Bettridge notched two more wins on one-meter and three-meter. The senior compiled scores of 310.20 on three-meter and 300.67 on one-meter. Cassie Weil also finished second on one-meter (293.40) and third on three-meter (283.15). Allie Alter notched a third-place finish on one-meter with a score of 252.31.

“We’ve started to modify our training in preparation for our championship season,” LSU Diving coach Doug Shaffer said. “We’ve been simulating more meet-like competition in training. This meet in particular gives us a different schedule for more experience. It gives us an opportunity to replicate what we are going to be doing in the postseason.”
