BATON ROUGE – Prior to a big week of games at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center, LSU Coach Johnny Jones will host his February Tipoff Luncheon this Tuesday (Feb. 3) at the L’Auberge Casino and Hotel in Baton Rouge.
LSU will host three upcoming games at home following the luncheon – Feb. 5, versus Auburn; Feb. 7 versus Alabama; and, Feb. 10 against No. 1 ranked Kentucky.
The monthly Tipoff Luncheons are presented by Hub International.
It’s also a special time to remember LSU basketball history and PA voice Dan Borne’ will be the special guest to remember the Jan. 31, 1970 night when “Pistol” Pete Maravich broke the national record for points scored in a career. Borne’ worked at the time for local station WAFB and covered the contest for CBS Radio Sports.
On Saturday, on the 45th anniversary of the game, a story written by Borne’ and audio clips he has preserved from that night with Pete and his dad Press, the coach of LSU at the time, will be available at LSUsports.net.
Ironically, Tuesday is also the 25th anniversary of one of the games fans call one of the greatest in the Maravich Center, the 148-141 win over Loyola Marymount on Feb. 3, 1990, which has been featured lately on SEC Rewind on the SEC Network. Borne’ was the PA announcer for that game trying to keep up with all that was going on in the game.
Following Borne’, Coach Jones will talk about his 16-4 Tigers as they prepare for the next stretch of games.
