BATON ROUGE – LSU’s home course, The University Club, will again be the site of post-season NCAA golf for both the LSU men’s and women’s golf teams in 2016 and 2017.
The Club, which opening in October 1988, will host one of the four NCAA Women’s Regional tournaments in 2016 and will host one of the six NCAA Men’s Regional events one year later in 2017.
The course underwent a nine-month renovation in 2009-10 giving the home of LSU’s national-ranked golf programs a renowned par-72 layout that has been praised nationally for its challenges for golfers of all levels. The course at the University Club was re-designed under the guidance of LSU legend and PGA Tour pro David Toms and noted golf course architect Jim Lipe, who designed the original University Club layout in 1988. The course is carved into nearly 300 acres of land just seven miles south of the LSU campus on Nicholson Drive.
The course was built on land donated to the Tiger Athletic Foundation and subsequently leased to The University Club.
For the LSU women, the 2016 tournament will mark the fourth time the Lady Tigers and LSU have hosted the regionals in Baton Rouge. LSU hosted one of the two first ever women’s regionals in 1993 at Santa Maria and hosted the regional at the U-Club in 2002 and 2007. LSU also has hosted a Southeastern Conference championship event on the layout in 2004.
For the LSU men, their first chance to host post season came in 2013 as they advanced to the NCAA Championships.
Both the 2016 and 2017 events will advance teams to their respective national championships which are now played at both stroke play and match play with the finals televised by The Golf Channel.
Both the men’s and women’s teams are approaching the start of their 2015 spring seasons with Chuck Winstead‘s Tigers set to tee it up for the first time on Feb. 16 in The Prestige at PGA West in LaQuinta, California. Karen Bahnsen‘s Lady Tigers will play its first spring round one day earlier on Feb.15 at the Lady Puerto Rico Classic at Rio Grande, Puerto Rico.
The Lady Tigers will also be in action on the University Club layout this spring, March 27-29, in the annual LSU Tiger Golf Classic. The event is free and open to the public and will conclude the regular season for the women’s golf team.
