LSU Expands 'Soldier Salute' to Men's Basketball

Dow’s ‘Soldier Salutes’ Begin at Maravich Center

BATON ROUGE — LSU Athletics this past Saturday night began its 2015 edition of its popular “Soldier Salutes” program, at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center.

At halftime of each men’s SEC basketball Saturday game, a military man/woman will be honored for their service and commitment to their country.

The “LSU Soldier Salutes” is presented by Dow Chemical.

This past Saturday at LSU’s win over Georgia, Staff Sergeant Joey D. Russell was the honoree.

Staff Sergeant Russell was born and raised in Baton Rouge. He graduated from Lee High and attended Southern University before enlisting in the United States Army in 2002 with an MOS of 94R (Avionic and Survivability Equipment Repairer). He has served in Fort Bragg North Carolina, and Fort Hood Texas.

Staff Sergeant Russell has three deployments in support of Operation Iraqi Freedom.  His awards include the Army Commendation Medal, Army Achievement Medal, Overseas Service Ribbon, Parachutist Badge, and Recruiter Badge. 

Currently, Staff Sergeant Russell is serving with the Baton Rouge Recruiting Company where he helps young men and women find their careers in the US Army to become Army Strong.

The next “LSU Soldier Salutes” is set for Saturday’s 11 a.m. game with Texas A&M. Also, Soldier Salutes will be held at every weekend LSU Baseball game at Alex Box Stadium during the 2015 season.
