BATON ROUGE – Back-to-back 20-point games for LSU’s Jarell Martin and a career high night for Janelle Perez of Northwestern State earned the pair the committee votes Monday for Louisiana Sports Writers Association college basketball player of the week.
Martin had 24 points and 9 boards in a win over Southern Miss, while he posted 26 points and 8 rebounds for the Tigers in a win over Savannah State.
Perez helped the Demons win their Southland Conference opener over Houston Baptist with 30 points for the Lady Demons.

21.5 ppg, 2.5 apg, 2.5 spg, 2.0 rpg, .500 FG%, .636 3Pt% … Perez set a career high with 30 points as the Lady Demons won their Southland Conference opener, 78-68, against Houston Baptist on Friday … Perez hit her first three 3-pointers against the Huskies, then scored 12 points in the final 3:46 to secure the victory … Perez tallied a season-high 5 steals against the Huskies … Her point total was NSU’s first 30-point game since Nov. 20, 2012, (Jamsine Upchurch, 30 points, vs. Wiley College) and the first against a Division I opponent since Feb. 21, 2008 (Tena Matthews, 34 points vs. McNeese State) … Against Oklahoma State, Perez was the only Lady Demon to reach double figures, scoring 13 points and shooting 60 percent (3-for-5) from the 3-point arc.
